Oyster Season is Here!

You may have noticed that we constantly rave about how fall is our favorite time of year around here and we’re going to give you yet another reason why: OYSTERS!

Doesn’t this look tempting?!

October 1st marks the official return of oyster season in the Lowcountry and there is no shortage of options on offer to sample this local delight. Our coastline has even been referred to as the ‘Napa Valley of oysters’ due to the ideal habitat of the region; the result of an abundance of flat, tidal areas, bountiful oyster reefs, and ideal temperatures for a lengthy spawning season.

For the adventurous, DIY types, you can get your South Carolina Saltwater Fishing License and head out into the surrounding recreational shellfish grounds during a low tide. Don’t forget a good pair of boots for the pluff mud, as well as gloves, a hammer, and a bucket. Just be sure you’re up to scratch on local DNR regulations and shell recycling locations! Keen to cook your own oysters, but forgo the harvesting part? Pick up a bushel or two to prepare at home from locally-owned Crosby’s Seafood Co. conveniently situated at the entrance onto Folly Beach.

More Than Just a Restuarant; a Local Institution
Outdoor dining at Bowen’s Island

Vacationing on Folly, you are especially fortunate to have one of the most renowned oyster institutions almost at your doorstep. Just a short two-mile drive (or bike ride) away, you’ll find the longstanding Bowen’s Island Restaurant; famous for both its delicious shellfish and jaw-dropping sunsets since its inception in 1946. Revered by everyone from humble natives to the New York Times, this no-frills, unpretentious classic is a must-try. Just be sure you bring some warm layers when the temperature drops as the dining area at Bowen’s Island is something akin to your back deck.

Have You Ever Been to an Oyster Roast?

Another great spot to check out is Bohemian Bull. Located just a few miles down Folly Road on neighboring James Island, this popular locale will be hosting all-you-can-eat oyster roasts for only $15 every Thursday evening at their backyard fire pit from 6-9pm! To top it off, they have great beer, bourbon, and whiskey specials as well as live local music to add to the experience. The first oyster roast of the season kicks of on November 7th.

For Those Who Prefer More Traditional Dining…

If you’re searching for a more upscale (or just heat and tablecloths) oyster experience, head into downtown Charleston. There is a wide array of oyster restaurants and raw bars that cater to every taste and budget, but here are some of our favorites to get you started:

  • Leon’s Oyster Shop; the trendy-yet-welcoming hotspot in a funky renovated garage on Lower King Street.
  • 167 Raw; a popular raw bar located in the heart of downtown and sourcing a huge variety of fresh East Coast oysters.
  • Hank’s Seafood; not only a restaurant, but a turn-of-the-century historic landmark that has been named Best Seafood Restaurant in Charleston for 18 consecutive years.

Happy shucking everyone!

It’s a Great Time to Visit Folly Beach!

Can you believe it’s already September? While summer may officially be winding down, the fall months are an ideal time to visit Folly Beach.

We survived hurricane Dorian!

First thing’s first; we know you’ve all heard about Hurricane Dorian on the news. We are very pleased to report that we had only relatively minor damage on the island, and everything was back to business as usual just one day after the storm. Nearly all of our properties fared fantastically, and are ready for you to come and enjoy! All local restaurants, shops, bars, and services are also open and back in full swing too.

Fall is still beach season on Folly

So now, let’s get back to planning your autumn escape. Here in the Lowcountry, we are lucky to enjoy warm temperatures through September, October, and oftentimes into November too. Not only can you soak up the rays and work on your tan, you can still comfortably take a dip or catch a wave in the ocean too as water temps do not begin to drastically drop until winter. Fall conditions are also ideal for activities on top of the water, such as kayaking, sailing, fishing, and paddleboarding.

Now we’ll talk about the crowds, or rather, the lack thereof. With school back in session, the island returns to a mellower version of its summer self. Take advantage of laid-back vibes, lots of space to set up and sprawl out on the beach, great deals via off-season discounts, less cars and more bicycles (the preferred method of transportation for Folly locals), and no waiting in line at your favorite dinner spot.

While the fall temperatures remain high, the humidity takes a hike. This makes for the perfect time to explore historic downtown Charleston, just a quick 15-minute drive away from Folly Beach. It’s also an ideal time to venture out to the area plantations and stroll through their stunning gardens. While the summer heat can be oppressive once you’re away from the sea breeze, the autumn months are a delightful time to walk around the streets of the peninsula and other area attractions that are off of the beach.

Sneak away for a quick getaway

Finally, the start of the off-season means the end of our standard minimum-stay requirements. You can now book short-stays of only 2 nights or more for any days of the week and at any our properties.*

What are you waiting for? Get in touch with us here at Folly’s Best Rentals and we’ll help you find the perfect vacation rental for your autumn getaway.

*Excludes holiday weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s (4-night minimum stay in effect).

48 Hours in Folly Beach

Did you know that Folly’s Best offers 2 and 3 night stays?* You can sneak away for a short stay with us here in Folly Beach this summer and still have plenty of time to enjoy the fun that Folly has to offer. Check out our ’48 hours in Folly’ itinerary below for some great ideas for your next getaway.

Day 1: Grab some wheels! The best way to get around the island is to trade your car for some wheels of another kind. You can rent bikes, mopeds, or golf carts and zip around with ease by dodging traffic jams and snagging prime parking. Added bonus, it’s much more fun than driving a car!

Naturally, the next stop will be the beach. Folly has plentiful public beach access at each block so no matter which one of our rentals you choose you won’t have any trouble getting onto the sand. If you’d like to just kick back and work on your tan, you can set your beach chairs and umbrellas up for the day or have one of the rental companies do it for you. For those looking for a bit more action, hitting the waves for a surf lesson is a must. Private, semi-private, and group options are available for all ages and ability levels. You can also rent surfboards by the hour or by the day at Ocean Surf Shop.

Once you’ve gotten your fill of sand and sun, there is no doubt you’ll have worked up an appetite and Folly has a ton of restaurants to suit every taste. Here at the Folly’s Best office, a few of our go-to favorites include Woody’s for the best pizza on the island and ice cold beer on the open-air patio, Snapper Jacks for their happy hour specials, live music, and stellar views from the rooftop bar, and Taco Boy for delicious tacos, tortillas, and tequila in a fun and funky setting in the heart of Center Street.

Day 2: Early bird gets the worm! If our dining recommendations didn’t lead you late into the night, wake up early and walk the Folly Pier to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Even if you sleep through the alarm, make sure your next move is over to the Lost Dog Café. This is a renowned all-day breakfast institution around here so the crowds can get heavy, but the reward is worth the wait. Black Magic Café is another great option for breakfast/lunch with quality brews on offer and an expansive menu of fresh and healthy fare (and vegan-friendly items as well).

Of course you came to Folly primarily for some beach time, so head back out to the sand and get your fill. It gets hot down here in the lowcountry though so be sure to stay hydrated – drop by locally owned and operated Bert’s Market to fill up your cooler on your way. Bert’s is a favorite among locals with their variety of goods and around the clock hours; as their slogan boasts, they may doze but they never close! If the tide is low, look for shark teeth while you’re at the beach; they are plentiful all along the Folly shoreline and make for a unique memento to bring home.

If your stay happens to fall over a Tuesday, you absolutely must attend a Paint with a Buzz class out on the patio at Chico Feo with local artist Briahna Wenke. Even if you think you have no artistic ability, you will be amazed at the masterpiece you produce and it’s so much fun. Not a Tuesday? Check the calendar for other classes around Folly; Bri often hosts sessions at other locales. Painting or not, you should still check out Chico Feo for super laid-back vibes that will make you feel like you’re hanging out in your friend’s backyard (if your friend had an extensive array of beers on offer).

A great way to wrap up the last night of your trip is with a sunset paddleboarding tour. The guys at Isla will provide you with all equipment and guide you through the spectacular marshlands that surround our island. Sunset is also when the dolphins are the most social!

Staying one more day? Why not head into downtown Charleston; it’s just a quick 20 minute drive from the heart of Folly. As a world-famous city and tourist destination, your options are quite literally endless. Take a carriage ride around the historic district, visit the City Market and pick up an authentic sweetgrass basket made by native Gullah weavers, or visit the South Carolina Aquarium and get up close and personal with marine life. Last but not least, eat. Charleston is a hot culinary destination and you can’t go wrong at any downtown restaurant you choose to dine at for any meal of the day.

So, are you ready for your trip? Get in touch with the girls at Folly’s Best today and we’ll help you find the perfect place to stay!

*Short stays are available to book 20 days prior to dates of travel, or if there is a gap in our reservations.

Lights Out Folly Beach

Did you know that Folly’s beach is a protected sea turtle nesting area? Starting in May each year, loggerhead sea turtles begin to crawl onto the beach and lay their nests near the sand dunes. Nesting season lasts through October. During this time, it is very important to remember to adhere the following:

  • Beachfront lights must be out from dusk to dawn. Please be sure to turn off any lights that illuminate the beach, and close curtains and blinds.
  • If using a flashlight on the beach at night, use one that has a red filter.
  • Fill in any holes in the sand and knock down any mounds. While digging in the sand and building sandcastles are lots of fun, sea turtles can get trapped or pushed off course when trying to make their way onto or off the beach.
  • Do not leave beach gear or trash behind.
  • No flash photography if you happen upon a sea turtle.
  • Do not disturb or threaten the sea turtles or the nests. This is a federal offense.
  • If you see a turtle, keep a safe distance and no flash photography.

Folly Beach Safe After Hurricane Florence

For more than a week, we were just like the rest of the East Coast were wondering when Hurricane Florence would make landfall. The forecast was pretty consistent in showing where she would make landfall and knew that this was an intense storm. Many residents in North Carolina were already evacuating their homes and heading more inland to take shelter from the storm on Monday, September 10, 2018.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2018, we received word that all Coastal Counties were on a mandatory evacuation. Wednesday, September 12th our office closed at noon to be sure that we could safely evacuate the area just in case Florence decided to make landfall near our beautiful island.

As the world watched one of the strongest storms inching closer and closer to the United States, we realized how large this storm really was. Beginning on Thursday, September 13th, the rain began in Eastern North Carolina and the wind was ripping through. By Friday, September 14th it had made landfall in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and we were still not sure if our area would be impacted. At 8 p.m., the core of Tropical Storm Florence had crossed from North Carolina into South Carolina, still throwing around 70 mph winds.

The next several days Florence showed her fury and decided to make a slow movement towards our state, South Carolina. Folly Beach did receive rain from the hurricane and some wind as well, but we were in the clear.

Folly Beach is Open

Folly’s Best Rentals opened back up for business on Saturday, September 15th as the curfew ended at 1:00 pm. We watched the news and saw the devastation that Hurricane Florence left in her path. Many residents in the Carolina’s have lost everything due to flooding, trees and just the devastation that Florence brought with her. While we feel very lucky to have had no damage or flooding to our area, our hearts go out to everyone in the Carolina’s who have been affected. If you are looking to help those who have been affected, making a donation to United Way Hurricane Florence Recovery will go a long way.

If you have a fall vacation coming up in the next few weeks, please monitor the road conditions in South Carolina. There are still many roads that are closed including many roads in North and South Carolina due to flooding or damage from the storm. We want to make sure that our guests get here to Folly Beach safely for their vacation!
