Did you know that Folly’s Best offers 2 and 3 night stays?* You can sneak away for a short stay with us here in Folly Beach this summer and still have plenty of time to enjoy the fun that Folly has to offer. Check out our ’48 hours in Folly’ itinerary below for some great ideas for your next getaway.
Day 1: Grab some wheels! The best way to get around the island is to trade your car for some wheels of another kind. You can rent bikes, mopeds, or golf carts and zip around with ease by dodging traffic jams and snagging prime parking. Added bonus, it’s much more fun than driving a car!
Naturally, the next stop will be the beach. Folly has plentiful public beach access at each block so no matter which one of our rentals you choose you won’t have any trouble getting onto the sand. If you’d like to just kick back and work on your tan, you can set your beach chairs and umbrellas up for the day or have one of the rental companies do it for you. For those looking for a bit more action, hitting the waves for a surf lesson is a must. Private, semi-private, and group options are available for all ages and ability levels. You can also rent surfboards by the hour or by the day at Ocean Surf Shop.
Once you’ve gotten your fill of sand and sun, there is no doubt you’ll have worked up an appetite and Folly has a ton of restaurants to suit every taste. Here at the Folly’s Best office, a few of our go-to favorites include Woody’s for the best pizza on the island and ice cold beer on the open-air patio, Snapper Jacks for their happy hour specials, live music, and stellar views from the rooftop bar, and Taco Boy for delicious tacos, tortillas, and tequila in a fun and funky setting in the heart of Center Street.
Day 2: Early bird gets the worm! If our dining recommendations didn’t lead you late into the night, wake up early and walk the Folly Pier to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Even if you sleep through the alarm, make sure your next move is over to the Lost Dog Café. This is a renowned all-day breakfast institution around here so the crowds can get heavy, but the reward is worth the wait. Black Magic Café is another great option for breakfast/lunch with quality brews on offer and an expansive menu of fresh and healthy fare (and vegan-friendly items as well).
Of course you came to Folly primarily for some beach time, so head back out to the sand and get your fill. It gets hot down here in the lowcountry though so be sure to stay hydrated – drop by locally owned and operated Bert’s Market to fill up your cooler on your way. Bert’s is a favorite among locals with their variety of goods and around the clock hours; as their slogan boasts, they may doze but they never close! If the tide is low, look for shark teeth while you’re at the beach; they are plentiful all along the Folly shoreline and make for a unique memento to bring home.
If your stay happens to fall over a Tuesday, you absolutely must attend a Paint with a Buzz class out on the patio at Chico Feo with local artist Briahna Wenke. Even if you think you have no artistic ability, you will be amazed at the masterpiece you produce and it’s so much fun. Not a Tuesday? Check the calendar for other classes around Folly; Bri often hosts sessions at other locales. Painting or not, you should still check out Chico Feo for super laid-back vibes that will make you feel like you’re hanging out in your friend’s backyard (if your friend had an extensive array of beers on offer).
A great way to wrap up the last night of your trip is with a sunset paddleboarding tour. The guys at Isla will provide you with all equipment and guide you through the spectacular marshlands that surround our island. Sunset is also when the dolphins are the most social!
Staying one more day? Why not head into downtown Charleston; it’s just a quick 20 minute drive from the heart of Folly. As a world-famous city and tourist destination, your options are quite literally endless. Take a carriage ride around the historic district, visit the City Market and pick up an authentic sweetgrass basket made by native Gullah weavers, or visit the South Carolina Aquarium and get up close and personal with marine life. Last but not least, eat. Charleston is a hot culinary destination and you can’t go wrong at any downtown restaurant you choose to dine at for any meal of the day.
